The TEF (Test d’évaluation de français) is an international benchmark exam that measures your level of knowledge and skills in French.
As part of the immigration and citizenship application procedures, the Federal government of Canada has been recognizing the TEF Canada since 2002 to measure one’s language skills in French.

Register for the TEF Canada (“Résidence Permanente“) examination in Vancouver in 3 easy steps:
1) Read the General Terms and Conditions of the TEF exams (in French). For example:

- You cannot re-take any part of a TEF exam if 30 days haven’t passed (in any TEF centre).
- Results can take up to 6 weeks to be issued after the exam date by the CCIP.
- The exact time of the tests will be determined by the centre a few days before the examination date (please make sure you are available all day).
- Registrations are final and no refunds can be issued. Under certain circumstances, the CCIP can consider rescheduling a candidate to a later date, if provided with adequate documentation (medical certificate, etc.).
2) IMPORTANT: Fill out and return this downloadable form to the TEF Coordinator. Attach a copy of your ID (passport page with photo);
3) Complete your payment using our secure payment system by selecting one of the session dates listed in the “Next sessions” tab. Make sure you complete all these steps before the registration deadline to secure your seat and finalize your registration.

Subsequent sessions are generally published about a month in advance. We are unfortunately no longer able to maintain a waiting list and recommend you check regularly the websites of all accredited TEF centres in the region or in neighbouring provinces to learn about available spots. |
Which are the skills tested in the TEF Canada?
This version of the TEF examination tests 4 skills :
- Listening (Compréhension orale) 40 min
- Reading (Compréhension écrite) 60 min
- Speaking (Expression orale) approx. 25 min
- Writing (Expression écrite) 60 min
How can I prepare for the test?
To prepare for this test, you have several options :
- Check-out the official TEF preparation page of the CCIP website, where you will find tutorials to familiarize yourself with the different parts of the exam as well as sample papers to practice with.
- Consider the up-do-date book “TEF secrets: the complete guide with insider tips” (in English), covering all four skills, available for purchase here.
- You can register for the only official online training course, in collaboration with PrepMyFuture and the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris.

More important information about TEF Canada
- Registration closes one week before the test date.
- Generally, candidates are invited just before noon and the exam takes place in the afternoon.
- All skills (except speaking) are tested on a computer. We will provide AZERTY (French) and QWERTY (US) keyboards. You can also bring your own USB keyboard.
- Make sure you secure your language test in advance to complete your immigration or citizenship application.
